GarageFit Garage dimensions guide
Garage dimensions: standard sizes for 1, 2 and 3 car garages.
Typical garage and door sizes are a useful starting point. Tracks, trim, storage and construction tolerances decide the space you can actually use—so this guide covers both.
SHORT ANSWER
One car: about 12 × 22 ft. Two cars: 24 × 24 ft. Three cars: 32–36 × 22–24 ft.
The most common doors are 8 or 9 ft wide for one car and 16 ft wide for two, usually 7 ft high. These are widely used planning sizes, not a building code. Your own measurements always win.
Standard garage sizes by number of cars

| 2-car garage | 20 × 20 ft (6.1 m × 6.1 m) | 24 × 24 ft (7.3 m × 7.3 m) | 26 × 28 ft (7.9 m × 8.5 m) |

Vehicle-by-vehicle clearances: garage door width and garage door height.
How to measure your garage correctly
- Door width: measure the narrowest clear horizontal opening between trim, seals and hardware.
- Door height: measure from the highest point of the floor or threshold to the lowest obstruction at the opening.
- Interior width: measure the usable wall-to-wall space where the vehicle will sit, excluding shelves, posts and stored items.
- Interior depth: measure from the closed garage door to the nearest permanent obstruction at the back.
Door clearance is not parking comfort
A vehicle can pass through the opening yet still be awkward to use. You need room to correct your angle, open the driver door, walk around the vehicle and keep clear of tracks, steps and cabinets. Pickup length can also leave too little room to close the door.
As a rule of thumb, about 2 to 3 ft beside the driver’s door makes getting in and out comfortable, and 2 ft or more of combined front and rear space leaves room to walk past. Measure the vehicle with mirrors extended and include roof rails, racks or antennas. If the fit is close, repeat every measurement and use a spotter.

What is the standard size of a garage?
Common planning sizes are about 12 × 22 feet for a one-car garage, 24 × 24 feet for a two-car garage, and 32 to 36 × 22 to 24 feet for a three-car garage. There is no single legal standard; builders and local rules vary.
What are the standard garage door sizes?
Single doors are usually 8 or 9 feet wide and 7 feet high. Double doors are usually 16 feet wide and 7 or 8 feet high.
How deep should a garage be for a pickup truck?
Many crew-cab pickups are 19 to 20 feet long, so 22 to 24 feet of usable depth is a safer target than 20 feet. Measure from the closed door to the nearest obstruction at the back.
Why does my garage feel smaller than its listed size?
Listed sizes are usually wall-to-wall. Steps, water heaters, shelving, posts, door tracks and the open door itself all reduce the space you can actually park in.
