Standard garage door height: is 7 ft enough?
Common garage door heights, and how much room 20 verified vehicles have beneath a 7-foot or 8-foot opening.
SHORT ANSWER
The standard garage door height is 7 ft (84 in).
8-ft doors are common in newer homes and suit trucks with roof racks; 10 ft and taller are for vans, lifts and RVs. The tallest stock vehicle in our list, the 2025 Ram 1500 Crew Cab, is 77.5 in high, which leaves 6.5 in under a 7-ft door—before antennas, roof rails or cargo.

How to measure garage door height
- Open the door fully and measure from the floor to the lowest point of the door, track or opener at the opening.
- Measure on both sides and the middle—sloped floors and sagging doors can change the number by an inch or more.
- Check inside too: the open door panel, opener rail and lights hang lower than the opening in many garages.
- Measure the vehicle at its tallest point, including roof rails, racks and antennas.
Then enter the numbers in the garage fit calculator. For width, see garage door width.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard height of a garage door?
The most common residential garage door height is 7 feet (84 inches). Many newer homes use 8-foot doors, and 10-foot doors are used for vans, lifted trucks and car lifts.
Is a 7 ft garage door tall enough for a truck?
Most stock pickups and SUVs are well under 7 feet tall, so they pass under a 7-foot door. Lifted trucks, roof racks, roof boxes and bikes on the roof are the usual problems—measure the tallest point of the loaded vehicle.
How tall should a garage door be for an RV?
RV and trailer doors are usually custom, commonly 12 to 14 feet high. Check the RV’s height including air conditioners and antennas.
How much headroom does a garage door need above the opening?
Standard track systems typically need roughly 10 to 12 inches of headroom above the opening, plus a few more inches for an opener. Low-headroom hardware exists for tighter garages.
