2 car garage dimensions: standard, minimum and comfortable sizes

Common two-car garage sizes, the door options that go with them, and how much room two real vehicles would have side by side.

SHORT ANSWER

A standard 2 car garage is about 24 ft wide × 24 ft deep.

20 × 20 ft is often cited as the practical minimum for two vehicles, and 22 × 22 ft is a common builder size. If you want storage, a workbench or two full-size trucks, plan for 26 × 28 ft or more. Doors are usually one 16 × 7 ft door or two 8- or 9-ft single doors.

Garage door sizes for a 2-car garage

One double door: The most common choice; both vehicles share one opening.16 ft × 7 ft (192 × 84 in)
Wider double door: More margin when two wide vehicles share the opening.18 ft × 7 ft (216 × 84 in)
Two single doors: A center post separates the bays; each door must clear one vehicle with mirrors.2 × 8 or 9 ft wide

The listed size is the nominal door size. Tracks, weather seals and trim usually make the clear opening slightly smaller, so measure the narrowest point. See garage door width and garage door height for vehicle-by-vehicle clearances.

Which vehicles fit a 2-car garage?

Each cell shows the combined front-and-rear space left, then the space on each side of the body when the width is split into 2 equal bays. Mirrors and door swing are not included. In the 20 × 20 ft size, 4 of our 20 vehicles would have less than 24 in of combined front-and-rear room.

Planning notes

  • Each vehicle gets roughly half the interior width. In a 20-ft-wide garage that is 10 ft per bay—only slightly wider than a typical parking space—so doors can only open partway.
  • With one 16-ft door, both vehicles enter through the same opening. With two 8-ft doors, check each vehicle’s mirror width against one door, not the whole wall.
  • Depth is the same problem as in a single garage: full-size pickups are often 19 to 20 ft long, so 20 to 22 ft of depth can leave little or no walking room.

Frequently asked questions

What are the standard dimensions of a 2 car garage?

A standard two-car garage is commonly about 24 feet wide by 24 feet deep (576 sq ft). Smaller builder plans are often 22 × 22 feet, and 20 × 20 feet is usually cited as the practical minimum.

What is the minimum size for a 2 car garage?

About 20 feet wide by 20 feet deep is commonly treated as the minimum for two vehicles. At that size each car gets roughly 10 feet of width, so door opening and walking room are limited.

How big is a 2 car garage door?

The most common double garage door is 16 feet wide by 7 feet high. Alternatives are an 18-foot-wide door or two separate 8- or 9-foot-wide single doors.

Will two SUVs fit in a 2 car garage?

Two mid-size SUVs usually fit in a 24 × 24 foot garage with room to open doors. In a 20 × 20 foot garage they may fit physically but leave very little space between them. Use the chart below or the calculator with your measured width per bay.
