Single car garage dimensions: how big is a one-car garage?
Planning sizes for a one-car garage, with the clearance each of our 20 verified vehicles would actually have inside.
SHORT ANSWER
A single car garage is typically 12 ft wide × 22 ft deep.
12 × 20 ft is a commonly cited practical minimum, while 14 × 24 ft or larger leaves room to open doors and walk around the vehicle. The usual door is 8 or 9 ft wide and 7 ft high. These are planning conventions, not a building code—your usable space is whatever you measure.

Garage door sizes for a single-car garage
The listed size is the nominal door size. Tracks, weather seals and trim usually make the clear opening slightly smaller, so measure the narrowest point. See garage door width and garage door height for vehicle-by-vehicle clearances.
Which vehicles fit a single-car garage?
Each cell shows the combined front-and-rear space left, then the space on each side of the body. Mirrors and door swing are not included. In the 12 × 20 ft size, 4 of our 20 vehicles would have less than 24 in of combined front-and-rear room.

Planning notes
- Width is usually the first problem: once a mid-size SUV is parked in a 12-ft-wide garage, there are only about 3 ft on each side for opening doors.
- Depth matters most for pickups. A crew-cab, short-bed truck is typically 19 ft or longer, which leaves very little room in a 20-ft-deep garage.
- Subtract anything permanent: steps into the house, a water heater, shelving or a chest freezer all reduce the usable depth or width.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard size of a single car garage?
A single car garage is commonly about 12 feet wide by 22 feet deep. 12 × 20 feet is often treated as the practical minimum, and 14 × 24 feet or more is considered comfortable.
What size garage door does a one-car garage use?
Most one-car garages use an 8-foot-wide by 7-foot-high door. A 9-foot-wide door is a popular upgrade for SUVs and pickups, and 8-foot-high doors help with taller vehicles.
Will a pickup truck fit in a single car garage?
It depends on depth. A crew-cab pickup with a short bed is often around 19 to 20 feet long, so a 20-foot-deep garage may leave only inches. Check the exact truck length against your measured interior depth.
How wide should a single car garage be to open the doors?
Plan for at least 12 feet of usable width; 14 feet makes it much easier to open front doors fully on both sides of most cars and SUVs.
