Standard garage door width: what size do you need?
Common garage door widths, and how much side clearance 20 verified vehicles would have through an 8, 9 or 10-foot opening.
SHORT ANSWER
Single garage doors are usually 8 or 9 ft wide; double doors are usually 16 ft.
That is 96 or 108 inches for one car and 192 inches for two. An 8-foot door fits most cars, but with mirrors many full-size SUVs and pickups have only a few inches per side. The real limit is the clear opening between the tracks and trim, which is slightly less than the nominal size.
Standard garage door widths
| Type | Feet | Inches | Meters | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 8 ft | 96 in | 2.4 m | Most common one-car door |
| Single | 9 ft | 108 in | 2.7 m | Easier entry for SUVs and pickups |
| Single | 10 ft | 120 in | 3.0 m | Wide single bay, trucks with large mirrors |
| Double | 12 ft | 144 in | 3.7 m | Wide single or narrow double |
| Double | 16 ft | 192 in | 4.9 m | Most common two-car door |
| Double | 18 ft | 216 in | 5.5 m | Two wide vehicles through one opening |
Door width usually follows the garage: an 8- or 9-ft door for a single car garage, a 16-ft door for a 2 car garage, and a 16-ft plus a 9-ft door for many 3 car garages.
Side clearance by vehicle: 8, 9 and 10 ft doors
Each cell is the space left on each side if the vehicle is perfectly centered. Where the manufacturer publishes width with mirrors, we use it. Where it does not (marked *), the number uses body width only and the real clearance will be smaller.

How to measure garage door width
- Open the door fully and measure across the opening at bumper height and at mirror height.
- Use the narrowest reading—between weather seals, track brackets or trim—not the size on the door label.
- Measure the vehicle at its mirrors, or check whether the mirrors fold and whether you will drive in with them folded every day.
- Enter both numbers in the garage fit calculator to see clearance on each side.
Replacing a door? Installers typically need a few inches of side room for the tracks beside the opening; one major retailer cites about 3¾ in per side for standard systems. Ask your installer for the exact requirement before choosing a wider door.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard width of a garage door?
Single-car garage doors are most commonly 8 or 9 feet wide (96 or 108 inches). Double doors for two-car garages are most commonly 16 feet wide, with 18 feet as a wider option.
Is an 8 ft or 9 ft garage door better?
An 8-foot door fits most cars, but wide SUVs and pickups can leave only a few inches per side once mirrors are included. A 9-foot door adds 6 inches on each side and makes daily parking noticeably easier.
How wide is a double garage door?
A double garage door is usually 16 feet wide (192 inches). Some homes use 18-foot doors, or two separate 8- or 9-foot single doors with a post between them.
Should I measure garage door width with mirrors?
Yes. The widest part of most vehicles is the side mirrors. Compare the narrowest clear opening of the door with the vehicle’s width including mirrors, or confirm that the mirrors fold before you enter.
